Norwegian Encore - Transatlantic - Day 11

Norwegian Encore - Day 11 - December 13, 2024 - AT SEA

There was no sunrise to see, as the weather was a bit cloudier and moodier than it had been. I love days like this, with waves crashing and grey skies.

After having breakfast in the main dining room, my favorite bell person, Sharon, wheeled me to the observation lounge where I could enjoy the view without being exposed to the elements. I picked an empty chair where I could relax and read for a couple hours. It was very nice, until it wasn’t.

The trouble with where I sat was that there weren’t many crew members coming by, so I’d need to flag someone down when I wanted to leave. I couldn’t get myself a glass of water. I couldn’t get myself to a restroom. My toes on my bum leg were exposed and cold and I didn’t have any socks that would fit over the splint. Every hour my Apple watch inconsiderately told me it was “Time to stand!”

Eventually I saw someone else being wheeled into the room and dropped off. I asked if I could be brought back to my cabin and the gentleman was happy to help me out. He said that wheelchairs were more in demand that day, as the ship was rocking more, so people who were less steady on their feet were being more cautious.

When I got back to my cabin, I called reception and asked if they might have an appropriate sock for my condition. They said no. It was the first time that I started feeling a bit sorry for myself. I still hadn’t heard a peep from Medical. There were only two days until we would reach Miami and I started getting a bit stressed about traveling alone without being able to walk.

Paul had told me that he had a friend who requested wheelchairs at the airport regularly. I found my flight reservation on the American Airlines site and discovered that is was incredibly easy to request wheelchair assistance. This is offered to everyone on every flight, I’ve just never had to pay any attention to it. Although I usually carry my luggage onto planes, I decided to cough up the $35 to add a checked bag to my reservation. One less thing to worry about.

I took out a pair of Bombas ankle socks and managed to stretch one over my toes and the edge of the splint.

It occurred to me that maybe I wasn’t the only person having a rough day. I enjoy the waves, but remembered that Paul had some issues with seasickness. We had connected on Instagram, so I messaged him asking how the ocean was treating him. He responded that the Dramamine was helping. We compared evening plans and decided to find each other later at the observation lounge when one of the musicians, Ricardo, would be playing.

Before that, I went to the main dining room for dinner. I ordered the lamb shank, which fell right off the bone. Very tasty.

When I found Paul, he asked if I played cards. I do! We played a couple games, one of which I’d never played. Not spit or Slapjack or Speed… Slap? I just looked for it online and now want to try Egyptian Ratscrew, which is a bit more complicated. We listened to Ricardo on the piano for a while and eventually decided to head to the Local for some snacks. How had I not discovered the hot fudge sundaes there before? It seemed like a good way to end the night.I called my last wheelchair of the day and hit the hay.

One more full day to go before Miami.
